Issued on what would have been his 69th birthday, November 4, 1948, this 3-cent stamp pays tribute to Will Rogers, the "Cowboy Philosopher." The first day of issue ceremony was held in Claremore, Oklahoma, where the Will Rogers Memorial is located. Will Rogers was born in 1879 in Oologah, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. He became one of the most famous and beloved figures of his time, known for his folksy humor, astute political commentary, and incredible skill with a lariat. He starred in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in more than 70 films. His syndicated newspaper column and radio broadcasts reached millions of Americans. Rogers was a proud Oklahoman and often spoke of his Cherokee heritage. This stamp, with its simple yet dignified portrait, honors a man who was truly the voice of the common person.
