On May 24, 1984, the U.S. Postal Service issued this 20-cent commemorative stamp in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to honor Jim Thorpe. Born in 1887 near present-day Prague, Oklahoma, in what was then Indian Territory, Thorpe was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he won gold medals in both the pentathlon and the decathlon, a feat that has never been equaled. He went on to play professional football and baseball. The stamp design is based on a photograph of Thorpe in his Canton Bulldogs football uniform. This stamp is a tribute to his remarkable talent, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his lasting legacy as a sports icon.
