Part of the "Contributors to the Cause" series, this stamp, Scott #1559, was issued in Danbury, Connecticut, and celebrates the heroic ride of Sybil Ludington. On the night of April 26, 1777, British troops were burning Danbury, a key supply depot for the Continental Army. With the messenger exhausted, sixteen-year-old Sybil volunteered to ride through the treacherous countryside to alert her father's militia. Her perilous 40-mile journey, much of it in the dark and rain, was instrumental in gathering the colonial forces who would engage the British the following day. Though less famous than Paul Revere's ride, Sybil Ludington's act of courage and determination exemplifies the spirit of resistance that was present in colonists of all ages and genders.
