Body
Issued in Charlestown, Massachusetts, on the 200th anniversary of the battle, Scott #1564 commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill. Fought on June 17, 1775, the battle was primarily contested on Breed's Hill. The colonial militia, having fortified the high ground overlooking Boston, repelled two major British assaults before being forced to retreat due to a lack of ammunition. The British suffered staggering casualties, including a significant number of officers. The battle was a costly victory for the British and a powerful demonstration of the colonists' will to fight. It dispelled any notion that the rebellion could be easily crushed and solidified the resolve on both sides for the long war to come.
