Prompt
The "MOLLY PITCHER" overprint subtly fades in and out, drawing attention to the name. The portrait of Washington behind the overprint seems to nod in approval. The ornate scrollwork on the sides of the stamp gently unfurls and curls back up.
Body

The story of Molly Pitcher is one of the most enduring legends of the American Revolution. While likely a composite of several women, the name has come to symbolize the bravery and contributions of women in the war. This stamp is unique in that it is an overprint on a regular issue 2-cent Washington stamp. The decision to overprint rather than create a new design was a matter of expediency for the Post Office Department at the time. Despite its simple design, the stamp is significant for being one of the earliest to honor a female figure from the Revolution, recognizing the important role women played in the fight for independence.
