Prompt
Snow gently falls across the scene. The soldiers' breath is visible in the cold air. Washington's horse snorts, a puff of steam coming from its nostrils. The tattered flags flutter in the wind.
Body

The fourth in the Bicentennial series of souvenir sheets, this one provides a different perspective on the Valley Forge encampment than the 1928 stamp. Trego's painting is a more realistic and somber depiction of the conditions faced by the soldiers. The five 31-cent stamps that make up the sheet focus on the faces of the weary but resolute soldiers and the steadfast leadership of Washington. The stamp serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of the war and the resilience of those who fought for independence.
