Body

As part of the "Gospel Singers" set in the "Legends of American Music" series, this stamp celebrates the life and legacy of Mahalia Jackson. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held in her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, during the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship's Conference. Jackson is widely regarded as the greatest gospel singer of all time. Her rich, powerful contralto voice and her passionate performances brought a new level of artistry and mainstream recognition to gospel music. She was a close friend and supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement, famously singing at the 1963 March on Washington. The stamp, with artwork by Gary Kelley, captures the soulful intensity of her performances.
