A Stamp for Stamp Collectors (1972)
Number

Prompt
The magnifying glass slowly moves from side to side, slightly distorting the image of the Franklin stamp beneath it. After a second or two, the man on the stamp should smile and stick out his tongue at the viewer.
Body
Issued in 1972, this 8-cent stamp was created to celebrate the hobby of philately. The design features a reproduction of the first U.S. postage stamp, the 1847 5-cent Benjamin Franklin, viewed through a magnifying glass. The strange twist in the story of this stamp is the negative reception it received from the stamp collecting community. Many collectors found the design to be uninspired and the colors garish. The "semi-jumbo" size was also a point of contention. The very audience the USPS was trying to court with this issue was largely unimpressed, making the "Stamp Collecting" stamp a curious case of a tribute that missed its mark.
